Is Bali’s Surf Scene Shifting? Bingin Beach Rising as the New Canggu is a question many seasoned travellers and surfers are asking. During my six-month Bali adventure, I spent a week exploring Uluwatu on a moped, uncovering beaches both famous and hidden. With a camera in one hand and my drone in the other, I ventured to every beach I could find. Some were well-known, others required navigating narrow alleyways or steep stairs down to secluded beaches, but each had its own unique charm. Bingin Beach, with its surf scene and evolving vibe, is quickly emerging as Bali’s new “it” spot, much like Canggu did a few years ago.

While Bingin Beach has long been a favourite among surfers, it’s now attracting more than just wave riders. Decades ago, surfers from all over the world were drawn to Bingin’s consistent reef break, and the beach soon became a quiet haven. Today, things are shifting. Boutique hotels, health-conscious cafés, and a growing scene of digital nomads have made Bingin a hot spot for travellers looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation. With its laid-back vibes and increasing popularity, it’s clear that Bingin Beach is evolving into the new Canggu.

What to expect at Bingin Beach Bali

What You Should Expect:
Bingin Beach offers a scenic, laid-back vibe with incredible views of the Indian Ocean, especially at low tide when the coral reef is exposed. The beach is a paradise for surfers, and the waves are often less crowded than nearby Suluban or Padang Padang. Visitors will find a handful of boutique hotels, cliffside cafes, and beach shacks offering a mix of local and international cuisine. The beach’s bohemian atmosphere, coupled with challenging surf breaks, makes it a favourite for both surfers and those looking for a more relaxed coastal escape.

What You Should Not Expect:
However, don’t expect luxury facilities. The beach can be difficult to access, with steep staircases leading down the cliffside, which might be a challenge for some. The reef bottom and strong waves make swimming tricky, so it’s more suited for experienced surfers. There are no public restrooms or showers directly on the beach, so plan ahead. If you’re looking for easy access and commercial comforts, Bingin beach might not be the best fit.

Most visitors stick to the main beach access, but if you’re willing to explore further, you can find quieter spots. Walk along the beach to the south, around the rocky outcrops, and you’ll discover smaller, more secluded beaches with fewer people. These hidden areas offer peaceful spots to relax and enjoy the stunning coastline without the hustle and bustle.

Best Time to Visit Bingin Beach Bali

The best time to visit Bingin Beach is early in the morning or late afternoon. Mornings offer great surf conditions before the crowds arrive, while late afternoon is perfect for soaking up the golden rays and watching the sunset. As a west-facing beach, Bingin provides one of the best sunset views in Bali. The beach can get crowded in the middle of the day, so if you prefer a quieter experience, try to avoid peak hours. Whether you’re there to catch waves or just enjoy the beach, planning your visit during these off-peak times will give you the best experience.

While Bali’s wet season (November to March) may bring some rain, it’s still possible to visit the beach during sunny intervals, and you’ll likely find fewer tourists during this time.

How to Get to Bingin Beach?

If you’re staying in the Uluwatu region, renting a scooter is the easiest way to reach Bingin Beach. For those coming from Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu, expect the journey to take about 1 to 1.5 hours. Many scooter rental companies offer motorbikes with surfboard racks, making it convenient to transport your board to the beach. Since Bingin is located at the base of a cliff, you’ll need to park your scooter or car at the top and walk down the stairs to access the beach.

Where is Bingin Beach?
Bingin Beach is located along the western coastline of the Bukit Peninsula in Uluwatu, South Bali. It’s roughly halfway between Balangan Beach and Padang Padang Beach, making it easy to visit multiple beaches in one day.

Arriving at Bingin Beach

When visiting Bingin Beach, parking is available for a small fee. Expect to pay around 10,000 IDR for cars and 5,000 IDR for motorbikes. The designated parking areas are a few minutes away from the beach access points, so you’ll need to follow the signs leading down narrow alleyways toward the cliffside stairs. Once you reach the stairway, it’s a steep but scenic walk down to the sand. About halfway down, you’ll encounter an intersection of paths leading to different parts of the beach, but don’t worry—all paths eventually lead to the shoreline.

Surfing at Bingin Beach Bali

Bingin Beach in Bali is home to one of the island’s shortest but most thrilling tube rides, perfect for those who love a quick and makeable wave. The best time to surf here is during mid to low tides, but be sure to pull off before the inside sucks dry! While Bingin was once a well-kept secret, it has become more accessible with a road leading to the cliff and numerous warungs and accommodations now lining the shore.

Despite its development, Bingin’s tight take-off zone can quickly get crowded. But that doesn’t take away from the fun. The laid-back beach vibe and the thrill of catching a fast, hollow wave make it worth the paddle out. Surfing here is all about timing and precision, but even if you don’t catch every wave, the atmosphere is unbeatable.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, the nearby surf break, aptly named Impossibles, offers even more action. Known for its high-speed tube runs, it’s best on a massive swell at dead low tide. While the name might sound intimidating, Impossibles delivers an exhilarating challenge for experienced surfers. Between Bingin and Impossibles, your surf adventure in Bali is sure to be unforgettable!

Bingin Beach is renowned for its left-hand reef break, offering surfers fast, hollow waves ideal for getting barrelled. This wave is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers, and the dry season (May to October) is when conditions are most consistent. The wave works best during low tide, when the barrels are more defined, offering some of the best rides on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

The reef break is located about 100 metres from the shoreline, and while it offers some of the best barrels in the area, beginners may find the conditions too challenging due to the reef’s proximity and the speed of the waves. However, if you’re up for a challenge, Bingin is one of the best spots to test your skills. Surfboard rentals are available along the beach, with rates starting at 50,000 IDR per hour, and there are plenty of local instructors offering lessons for beginners who want to watch the experts before diving in.

Sunbeds at Bingin Beach

There aren’t many amenities at Bingin Beach, but that’s part of its charm. You can rent umbrellas by the beach for only 100,000 IDR for a few hours, providing a great way to escape the midday sun. There are also a handful of beachfront restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or sip on a refreshing drink while enjoying the view. However, there are no changing rooms or public showers at the beach, so it’s worth noting that you’ll need to use the facilities in nearby restaurants.

Bingin is a popular spot for surfing, and there are several surf shacks along the beach offering a wide selection of boards for rent. Surfboard rentals typically cost 150,000 IDR for two hours. If you’re interested in learning to surf, you can inquire with local surf instructors at the rental shacks for lessons. Not into surfing? No worries! There’s plenty of exploring to do—head south along the sand to discover secluded beaches and abandoned shacks at the base of the cliffs.

Best Places to Watch Sunset at Bingin Beach

Bingin Beach boasts one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Bali. As the day winds down, the sky transforms into a canvas of warm hues, with shades of orange, red, and purple blending into the horizon. Some of the best places to watch the sunset are the beachfront warungs, where you can sit back with a cold beer or fresh coconut, or from the sandy beach itself with the waves lapping at your feet. For a more elevated view, head to one of the cliffside cafés or bars. No matter where you choose, the sunsets at Bingin Beach offer a magical experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Too Busy? Relax and Do It with a Tour

For those looking to skip the hassle of organising transport, a full-day tour is an excellent option. Many tours offer pick-up and drop-off from your hotel and visit multiple locations on the Bukit Peninsula, including Bingin Beach, Uluwatu Temple, and other must-see spots like Pandawa Beach and Padang Padang Beach. These tours also often include stops for the famous Kecak Fire Dance and a seafood dinner on Jimbaran Beach. If you prefer a stress-free experience with all logistics covered, booking a tour is the way to go.

There are plenty of things to do at Balangan Beach, making it an ideal spot whether you’re there for a few hours or the whole day.

Surf Bingin Beach or advance to Impossibles
Balangan is a great surf destination, especially for intermediate surfers. You can rent surfboards from one of the local shops or take a lesson if you’re a beginner.
