If you’re planning a trip to Bali, then this post “Balangan Beach: A Perfect Blend of Surf and Relaxation” should assist you if you thinking about heading down to Uluwatu for a long stay or just a day trip.
When we started “Travelling Planet Earth” we needed to start somewhere and Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia was easily our first choice. We know that Bali has its pros and cons or mystically its good versus evil but the Uluwatu coastline, for now (development is moving at a ludicrous rate!) is definitely on that good side. Having decided to see every Uluwatu beach during our six-month trip of Bali, we spent a week in Uluwatu basing ourselves in Padang Padang, zipping around the coastline on a cheap Vario Moped for $8 AUD a day. We visited, photographed, and “droned” each beach we could find, some of which were tricky to reach! (Like Pantai Nunggalan & Greenbowl)

Heading to Uluwatu – Travelling Planet Earth – Balangan Beach: A Perfect Blend of Surf and Relaxation
So lets get started. As you leave the Kuta/Canggu area behind and head up into the Bukit Peninsula one of the first beaches you can see signposted is Balangan Beach. It’s truly one of the best kept beaches in the Uluwatu region and has long been known as one of Bali’s best surfing spots based not only on the surf but the laid back beach vibe. Surfing at Balangan dates back decades, its history, along with the stunning white sands and cliffs, draws travellers from around the globe. But don’t worry, it’s not overdeveloped just yet, so you’ll still get that authentic Balinese feeling when you first arrive. To me having seen Uluwatu in the late 8os, Balangan Beach still has an old Bali undeveloped feel, But unfortunately like everything on Bali that wont last.

What to expect at Balangan Beach Bali
What You Should Expect:
Balangan Beach offers soft white sands, crystal-clear waters, and stunning panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. It also has a rural feel with cows roaming freely up and down the beach. The beach is perfect for relaxing under a palm tree or hanging out at one of the many warungs. It is also situated on the right side (which is the left side) of the peninsula for watching the sunset. You can also look to catch a wave at one of Bali’s most famous surf spots with any experience level. You can expect to spend your day lounging on deck chairs, swimming, or exploring the cliffs which are known for instagram worthy landscape images.
What You Should Not Expect:
Don’t expect overly commercialised attractions or luxury beach clubs. Balangan remains more low-key compared to beaches like Seminyak and Canggu or even Bingin and Suluban which are quickly being (over) developed. There are only a handful of local warungs (small restaurants) for dining, and the area still retains a charming, laid-back vibe without the hustle and bustle of more tourist-heavy areas.
Escape the Crowds
Although Uluwatu is becoming increasingly popular, Balangan Beach remains a quieter alternative to beaches like Padang Padang or Dreamland. To truly escape the crowds, consider visiting Balangan early in the morning or later in the afternoon. I found little traffic from 6am through to 10am but after that it can get very busy on the main road heading into Uluwatu with all the day trippers and tour vans. For those wanting an even more tranquil beach experience, lesser-known locations like Greenbowl or Nyang Nyang offer a peaceful retreat away from the bustling tourist spots. While Balangan is still relatively laid-back, it’s best to plan your visit outside of peak hours to enjoy the serene beauty of the beach.
Best Time to Visit Balangan Beach Bali
The best time to visit Balangan Beach is during Bali’s dry season, from April to October. These months offer sunny days, warm temperatures, and relatively calm seas, perfect for beachgoers and surfers alike. Mornings are often the best time to visit, as the beach can get crowded by midday, especially with day-trippers. Sunset is another magical time, as Balangan’s west-facing location makes it one of the best spots in South Bali to watch the sunset.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. While Bali’s wet season (November to March) may bring some rain, it’s still possible to visit the beach during sunny intervals, and you’ll likely find fewer tourists during this time.
Surfing at Balangan Beach Bali
Balangan Beach in Bali is a must-visit for surf lovers, offering a thrilling left-hand reef break that’s ideal during the highest or lowest tides of the month. While it’s not a perfect wave – mid-tide waves tend to close out – the beach has an undeniable charm. Whether you’re catching waves near the cliff or at the tail end, Balangan delivers a unique surfing experience.
During my week exploring Uluwatu’s beaches, Balangan captured my heart as one of Bali’s most authentic, laid-back beaches. With its powdery white sand, towering palm trees, and the occasional wandering cow, it feels like a step back in time. The essence of a true Balinese surfing community is alive and well here. And, of course, after a day of surfing, you can enjoy a classic nasi goreng and a cold beer at one of the old-school warungs lining the shore.

What makes Balangan even more special is the added bonus of culture and breathtaking views. Midway along the beach, you’ll find a small, charming temple that adds to the local vibe. But the real showstopper is the viewpoint from the southern cliff, where you can take in the stunning panorama of the entire coastline – a picture-perfect spot to end a day of adventure.
Balangan Beach is a well-known surf spot that caters to various skill levels, making it a fantastic location for surfers of all kinds. The long left-hand reef break is particularly popular with intermediate surfers looking to enjoy a consistent wave that peels beautifully across the bay. During the dry season (May-September), the waves tend to be more manageable, offering perfect conditions for those still honing their skills.
For beginners, Balangan offers surf schools and board rentals, making it easy to get started. However, it’s essential to check the tides before heading out, as the reef can be exposed at low tide, making it tricky for novice surfers. High tide is generally the best time for beginners, as the waves are fuller and less intimidating.
Advanced surfers can also find a challenge at Balangan Beach, especially during the wet season (October-April), when larger swells roll in. The waves during this time can get quite powerful, offering thrilling rides for seasoned surfers. The beach’s left-hand point break, combined with its relatively uncrowded lineup, makes it a gem for those looking for a more intense surf experience.
Best Places to Watch Sunset at Balangan Beach
Balangan Viewpoint (Southern end of Beach)
This clifftop viewpoint is the most famous spot to watch the sunset. Located at the northern end of the beach, the view stretches over the coastline and the Indian Ocean, making it perfect for photography and Instagram-worthy moments. You can either ride your motorbike around to the viewpoint or walk down the beach and up the stairs.
Beachside Warungs
Grab a drink at one of the old style local warungs that line the beach or rent a sun lounger, and settle in for a relaxing sunset. Watching the surfers catch the last waves of the day adds to the laid-back ambiance.
Mazu Beach Club

For an uninterrupted view, head to the cliffs near the Golf Course. It’s less crowded than the main viewpoint, and you’ll still have a panoramic view of the stunning sunset.

BGS Bali is a unique combination of surf shop and coffee spot, popular for its laid-back vibe and community feel. It’s a favorite among surfers and travelers who enjoy grabbing a quick coffee before heading to the beach. The café is known for its excellent brews, made from locally roasted beans.
A recommended choice is their espresso, served strong and rich. It’s the perfect pick-me-up after a day of surfing or exploring the nearby beaches.
Getting there – Balangan Beach: A Perfect Blend of Surf and Relaxation
How to Get to Balangan Beach?
Getting to Balangan Beach is simple once you’re in the Uluwatu region. The best way to travel around is by renting a scooter, which gives you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace. If you’re not confident in riding a scooter, renting a private car with a driver is a popular alternative. From Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu, it’s about a 1 to 1.5-hour drive. For scooter rental, make sure you have an international driver’s license and carry cash for parking fees. If you prefer not to drive, apps like Grab and Gojek also offer transportation services, but rides back might be difficult to find due to the beach’s remote location.

Where is Balangan Beach?
Balangan Beach is located on the southwest coastline of the Bukit Peninsula, in Uluwatu, South Bali. The beach is roughly halfway between two other popular spots: Dreamland Beach and Tegal Wangi Beach. If you’re staying in Uluwatu or nearby areas like Bingin Beach, it’s about a 15-20 minute scooter ride. From more northern areas like Seminyak, Canggu, or Kuta, expect a longer journey of 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. You can use Google Maps to navigate directly to this stunning beach.

Arriving at Balangan Beach
Once you arrive at the parking lot at Balangan Beach, you’ll need to pay a small parking fee: IDR 5,000 for scooters and IDR 10,000 for cars. There are two parking areas, one on the right, which leads to the famous cliff viewpoint, and one on the left, closer to the surf break. After parking, follow the dirt trail to the cliffside, where you can snap some fantastic photos before descending the concrete steps down to the beach. The beach itself is free to access, and you can stay all day to soak in the views or enjoy the surf.
